i have a question about bonsai potting soil. i just bought some form the local nursery the brand they stock is GrOwbetter. seems like plan old potting mix. my plan is to sieve it to 1/4" then add 1/4" sand to it would this be a good place to start? i hoping to grow afew river red gums in it. if that helps.

Hi Aaron,

Welcome to AusBonsai! :aussie: ...and bonsai in general!

I have not used Growbetter bonsai potting soil, but I think you plan to add some coarse sand is sound. You may find that you lose a lot of the potting soil though, as it is usually quite fine. :lost:

Since you are look into RRG, check out FlyBri's posts, he seems to have done a lot with them. I on the other hand can offer you no advice on natives!

Hi there..

Check out the rest of the forum in here.
There are some great posts on soil mixes that I myself have been learning a heap about myself.

Have a look on the second page and in particular some posts and threads related to the sticky in this forum.

Here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=5138
And Here in particular: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=5745

Also a "topic search" or "advanced search" on your key words works pretty well.

Welcome to Ausbonsai! I'm just new myself!
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful
