G,day Steve my mates in the Western Suburbs use, Carnarvon river sand (available though the club) a premium grade potting mix and Coco peat.
They grow Ficus Conifers Natives and Deciduous, all in this mix. That is the mix that Asquiths used to sell.
Which is avalaible at Bonsai emporium, in bags.
Cheers Pup

Hi Fiona, Nice to hear you having success too. I lost a rosemary too, but i think that just did not survive the collection rather than the mix. I am finding that although the top of of the pot may be fairly dry, the bottom of it when I dig down or repot is surprisingly wet.
Having said that, I will be watering 2 times a day when it gets hot from mid december or so.. I watered only once a day last year, and did not lose anything, but interested to try more water this summer.

Re: Help me make a good soil mix please?
Ya second that Craig I was using aquatic mix from richgro to get diatomite ....... I think it had diatomite in it it was good any way then they ran out for months the when it reappeared it was made of a much heavier substance .
I use a mix of crusher dust( crushed granite.) washed what I have left of the richgro aquatic mix, zeolite, premium potting mix and Apex a slow release fertilizer . I vary the mix depending on how much drainage I think the bonsai needs but never use much potting mix just a bit hope that helps

I've decided to go with a 4 part mix. One part Amgrow Bonsai Mix, one part Yates Professional Potting Mix, one part Homebrand kitty litter and one part Brunnings Easy Wetta Coir-Peat Brick.
I mixed some up last night and it looks pretty good, crumbly and loose and yet still with enough organics (I haven’t got my head around inert potting mix yet).
Pup, which club has the Carnarvon river sand?
Cheers Steve

Bonsai Society of Western Australia. Has the carnarvon river gravel. The Bonsai workshop has access to Akadama the Japanese soil mix base.
