Re: What is 360?
This is a controversial subject supported by Will Heath from Michigan in the U.S. and supports the theory that trees can be viewed from all angles and that no tree has a preferred front. In other words a 360 degree appreciation which I support to some degree on Broom and some Weeping styles. Walter Pall also endorses this on some of his trees but I really don't see it myself. Most of us have two dimensional trees with the added back branch to imply a three dimensional effect. We enjoy a preferred front for the purposes of showing to the viewer.
It will be great to hear what the other members feel about this.

Re: What is 360?
I found the thinking very intresting. I remember a few years ago when I fisrt saw the thin forward leaning side view of a maple bonsai that was amazing from the front. I would not knock anyone for doing this I believe in personal chioce but I would pfrefer a tree that was relativly apealing from as many angles as possible even if the chosen front lost some impact as a result.
I remember a massive mulbery tree as a kid. It was left to it's own devices growing next to a cottage ruin. It made a massive instat cubby with massive branches that touched the ground 80% of the way around, great to climb and plenty of mulbries to eat and thow at each other . To take a picture of this tree you would pick the opening of the branches to show the massive branch structure, but then you would walk around it to apreciate it fully. I would not like to walk around a bonsai and see the other side of the smoke and mirrors.

Re: What is 360?
According to the most senior of teachers ( Sensei ) a tree that has a 360% look is a good tree.
I personally find them pleasing and perplexing. Some teachers also say, that it is not the front it is the preferred veiwing side.
I just like good trees. Whatever you choose is right for you after all you are the one spending your time and effort.
The most important thing is to enjoy it. Because if you do not it will not get the treatment it deserves and die. No tree deserves that.
Just my opinion for what its worth. Pup

Somebody on BonsaiTALK (can't remember who) once said: "A good bonsai is like my wife, looks beautiful from all sides, but i still know where the front is!" (or something to that effect). I admire this quote, both for the comedy and the mode of thinking.

Re: What is 360?
A comment in Bonsai Focus from an apprentice puts an intresting spin to this comment. He stated that a regular customer informed him that one of his previously styled trees had died. The apprentice had really liked this tree and was very sorry to hear it. The costumer stated it's ok I never really liked that one anyway. The apprentice learnt then that if he was to master this craft he must be able to style trees the way a customer likes as well as himself or else his creations would not get the care they deserved. The most important thing is to enjoy it. Because if you do not it will not get the treatment it deserves and die. No tree deserves that.
Yet Walter states even though he sells some trees he never styles to sell.
The one consistant is you must enjoy your trees the way you like them.

Hi Soltan,
don't know who Walter is but a man after my own heart. The tree will dictate the design if you look into it hard enough for inspiration.
Then design the tree you like and if others like it all well and good.
cheers
Dave

Re: What is 360?
Maybe its another one of those virtual bonsai thingies that take way too long to load. I never understood why someone would spend so long making a fake bonsai on a computer that doesnt even look good.
