[shibui] shimpaku group
I'm just throwing this entry in to see what happens.
I'm hoping to use all 3 of these in the planting.
Species Juniper chinensis - shimpaku
The longest one is about 30 cm, the little one is about 10 cm tall
Obtained from Shibui Bonsai
Cost $10 each = $30 total.

Re: [shibui] shimpaku group
Getting close to time for an update so I decided to get on with this group today.
My plan was to make a group on a rock. Apply some 'muck' where the roots will go, add the trees and cover the roots with more muck. Then some moss to hold it all together. I'll probably regret not spending a few more minutes to put some wires to hold the trees in place Time will tell.

Good result, natural feeling to the composition.
Was wondering, how would the height be measured, is it to the top of the rock?

Re: [shibui] shimpaku group
Great job Neil, I love the windswept flow of the group. You certainly have some great rocks for Bonsai out your way.
Craig I was under the impression shohin are measured from the pot rim to the highest foliage. Jins and rocks are not taken into account as far as I am aware but it is supposed to be easily help in 1 hand? If the rock or Jin is massive than it will not be classed as shohin. I could also be horribly wrong though haha.
Cheers,
Pearcy.

Re: [shibui] shimpaku group
I always believed that bonsai are measured from rim of pot to topmost foliage.
I think the rock is just over 250mm so I won't mind if this is ruled ineligible. The comp just gave me a reason to put it together.

Re: [shibui] shimpaku group
I think the planting should be allowed irrespective, the rule can be clarified for next comp if not already defined. Suppose is up to judges to decide.

Re: [shibui] shimpaku group
So far so good. None of the trees has fallen off the rock, despite not being tied on.
For a while it sat on the benches with the rest of the bonsai but the moss at the top was struggling with only one water each day. Down lower it was nice and green because the suiban holds some water for a while.
Recently I put it into the propagation area under the automatic mister. Moss is now nice and green again. There's also plenty of new shoots on the junipers so looks like they will be ok after the trauma of bare rooting and having the roots slathered with keto.
I think I'll leave it a little longer before attempting detail wiring.

Re: [shibui] shimpaku group
I'm still coming to grips with this one, its a bit if a mystery to me. The rock goes one way and the trees the other. I may need to study it a little more?

Re: [shibui] shimpaku group
Here is an update on the juniper mountain.
I was having lots of trouble keeping the moss going outside in the sun so moved it into the igloo under the automatic misting. Moss is growing well now but I think the junipers are showing the lower light levels it now has. Lots of juvenile growth (which could also be a reaction to the last pruning) and long internodes. This variety normally has very dense foliage when I grow it outside in full sun.

I know what you mean Watto. I was trying for a coastal cliff where trees are shaped by onshore winds. Maybe it will work, maybe not. I'll persist with the current direction for a few years. Can always change it around in future is it still looks wrong.I'm still coming to grips with this one, its a bit if a mystery to me. The rock goes one way and the trees the other.
