Acacia howittii root reduction

Post by Ces »

I would like to pot one of my A. howittii into its first bonsai pot sometime this summer. My question is... how do they go with heavy root pruning? to place it in the pot I'm thinking of for it, it will need somewhere around a 50% reduction.

Is this possible? thanks for the help guys.

Cheers,

Ces.

I think it is possible, but until you are really comfortable I think 30 to 40% is a better option.
I intend to repot one of mine this weekend so let us know how you go.

I have killed 2 bare rooting them but in saying that the third one did survive and sulked for 2 years but is starting to grow.
Again. :| I was talking to a grower from south oz and he reckons early spring is best . I would be trying to wait until you know the weather is going to be in the low 20s for a week after. I'm leaving my other one until next spring and putting a saw through the rootball in half and putting it in a hanging basket.

I only take off about 1/3 of mine and do so in spring after flowering.
So long as not going to be real hot, and keep the water ip then you could repot in early summer too

thanks guys.

They are beautiful but temperamental. I might wait until the end of summer (when temps are settling) and go for a third. I definitely wont be bare rooting.

Thanks again for the input.
