Suggestions for a good book?

Post by bonsaifreak07 »

Hey everyone,

So since getting into bonsai around a year ago, ive always used the internet as my reference and guide. and it gets difficult with having to search around for various things, so now i am after a good, solid bonsai book. Something that covers basically all aspects of bonsai and is up to date. thanks guys! :D

I have a good book called 'Bonsai' Its Art,Science,History and Philosophy.By Deborah R.Koreshoff.
It is not exactly a new book first published in 1984. But it covers just about everything.

Search the forums.

There are some good threads which review the bulk of your options.

I asked a similar question the other day and got some good suggestions: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17163

Dan Barton's bonsai book :) I was given a copy by a former ab member and i still refer to it all the time. Out of all the 40+ books on the subject that Ive accumulated its still the most helpful and relevant.

Also worth a read:

John Naka's Bonsai Techniques I http://www.amazon.com/Bonsai-Techniques ... chniques+i

Marty Mann's Bonsai Ideas http://www.amazon.com/Bonsai-Ideas-Mart ... 0976136201

Both Naka and Mann write from the perspective of one in a Mediterranean climate, which isn't too far from what you've got.

Covers almost everything, with up to date pics, many progressions, and you can talk with the author and he always provides more detail.

Most books that demonstrate 'technique' are dull or many times incorrect.

The only books that I now buy are bonsai today magazines (kinbon articles), and Kokufu show books.

*edit: Actually Leong's Pine book is good - http://www.bonsaisouth.com.au/bonsai/in ... te-climate
And the Bonsai Boon DVDs are good too - http://www.bonsaiboon.com/pages/shopping.html

Any Koreshoff book :) The one mentioned above is the best, but there are also cheaper alternatives like "Bonsai in Australia" or "Bonsai with Australian Native Plants" which are still great books :)
Have a question? The AusBonsai Wiki most likely has the answer!
