Re: [matty-j] Juniperus X Media Shimpaku
just thought i would post a photo of my tree with todays paper
i intend on doing a tanuki style
ive carved out the dead wood i started with this lump of callistemon
i started with removing all the bark and cutting the tallest part of the deadwood to 250mm
i then started to carve the hollows and then tried to add some character to the piece
this was my first real attempt at carving and i enjoyed it a lot
i have attempted a tanuki once before and i did a terrible job fixing the tree into the pot and i just cant get it to stop wobbling
this time round i had a much better idea at what i was doing
i added nails to the bottom of the deadwood and tied wire to them before adding the plaster base
hopefully the plaster base will help support the tree and the wires will be used to tie it off in the pot
i gave it a lime sulphur this afternoon and tomorrow i will begin adding the shimpaku's to the deadwood
i still need to carve the grooves in the deadwood for the trees to be fixed into
cheers

Nice work with the carving, Matt, that's looking good. I've always thought a tanuki might be fun if the right piece of deadwood showed up, and you've got a good start there. Can't wait to see how this turns out.
Cheers, Karl

Re: [matty-j] Juniperus X Media Shimpaku
so i finally got around to grafting the two shimpaku to the deadwood
i'm fairly happy with it, its secured well to the dead wood the channels i carved for the trunks to be attached are ok, slightly wider in some parts but time will fix this just not in the 18 months of the comp haha
i didnt remove any of the roots i did have to rake out some of the bottom and side to secure them on
ill be waiting till spring to give it a repot and try and spread the roots out so i can get it into a shallower pot later on.
tomorrow ill be giving it a full wire and will give an update
cheers

Re: [matty-j] Juniperus X Media Shimpaku
hey everyone!
Another late update
I repotted this tree at the very start of november, it has put on a nice amount of growth I have been pinching lots of the new growth tips here and there.
I will need to get in there and thin it out and wire anything i can, to be honest I have lost my way with this tree i have been looking at it and cant see what i want it to look like in the future.
Hmmm more staring, pondering and beer is in order i think
Cheers
Matt
