This should be the tanuki.
I posted it on the wrong melaleuka. I shall shift it here.

Re: [Neli] Melaleuca Johannesburg gold
I first chopped it:
and then had nothing better to do so I spent the day turning it into a tanuki.
First drilled a hole...then enlarged it....then decided to open it on one side since the plant can get airlayered if the trunk grows.
Not decided yet if I shall keep the tanuki...so left both options open.
I used the sacrifice branch for the tanuki. Treated the wood with lime sulfur, and some silicon in the part thet will be in the ground. The plant will be tilted forward.

My melaleuka has grown crazy during the time I was in Japan and that was a bit over a month. I could not believe it. Here it is:
The trunk in the tanuki has thickened up, and lots of suitable branches are there. When repotting I will have to shift the tree forward. For now I left the small branches to thicken but will need to wire them when I find some time. The rest, which was not needed was removed.

Re: [Neli] Melaleuca Johannesburg gold
I transplanted it and had some branch die back. After root reduction the tanuki part died. Must have chopped some roots that were feeding it...but still on, with the other part of the tanuki that remained as miserable as it looks.

Damn.
That's a shame but I still think you might be able to make something from what is left.!

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: [Neli] Melaleuca Johannesburg gold
I think I root pruned it too much...It was in a huge packet...it did not show sign of wilting in the rest of the tree. Just the tanuki died and it had fused so well to the old wood.
