Autumn 2024

Post by Albo »

Living in Sydney it’s hard to get a good autumn colour from typical bonsai subjects. Just doesn’t get cold enough.

One that colours well in this area is the tallow tree. I threw some seedlings in a pot last year and have been impressed the colour show.

I Don’t think they make Great Bonsai subjects, I suspect they drop branches easily. But I might do a clump or forest with them but keep mainly for the autumn colour.

Others that colour well in Sydney are The crêpe myrtle, liquidamber And Chinese Quince.

Surprisingly good year for JM in bayside melbourne, just been fighting off the caterpillars for the last 4 weeks to try to preserve some leaves on them :x

Not sure yet how good the Ginkgos will be, so :fc:

I saw that in the central coast show.
I took a photo of it.

I had a couple growing on my nature strip at my last house. Very nice trees, always wondered how they would go as Bonsai. Apparently they go well.
Good flower show in spring on the ones I had.

Does yours flower well?

I’ll try find a stump somewhere

I picked up a swampy from bonsai world a couple of days ago.
Nice copper autumn foliage.

I’ll be interested to see if it colours as well in Sydney climate next year.

The best colour is probably past up here but there's still some remnants out in the Shibui Bonsai nursery.

Nuffin happening with autumn colour here in sub tropical Brisvegas. We've had such a warm wet Summer.

Thanks for sharing your gorgeous coloured up trees though!

Neil, I don't think I've seen that twin trunk palmatum (img_2645) before, a very nice base! Any other pics of it?

Nebari on that Japanese maple for you, Scott

Some dieback has made that tree less showable so I guess that's why you have not seen pics recently. One of the main trunks has died right back to the fork and there's dead sections on most other branches.
IMG_2684.jpg
IMG_2685.jpg
The dead bits appeared shortly after the tree was defoliated in late summer in preparation for an Autumn show. All damaged areas were on the tops of branches so I assume it was sunburn caused by the sudden exposure after removing the leaves. The trunk continued to die slowly over a few years which may mean some other problem or secondary infection. Damage on branches is slowly healing.

I've been contemplating how to restyle for a few years but have not had the time or enthusiasm to do it yet. Maybe this winter?

Hi,

Can anyone steer me to someone willing to sell either a large Japanese maple bonsai or something pre bonsai.

I want something well established , solid trunk lines and in need of some development or something well developed.

Understand that what I’m after potentially won’t be cheap which is ok providing the quality is there

Thanks and sorry if this is / has been covered
